i ♥ faces photo challenge: Smiles!

The challenge this week at i ♥ faces is all about Smiles! Although I have a ton of great smile pictures of my daughter and many other beautiful little ones, I immediately knew which photo would be my entry for this week. 14 day old baby Jayden was my very first newborn shoot, and was the perfect little model for me. He gave me no trouble at all, and at the end of our session he gave me his thanks with a smile. I must say, I did a little happy dance right after capturing this photo. I think his parents might have thought I was a little crazy. hehe

This weeks theme at I♥Faces is "Dramatic B&W". I was fortunate enough to be able to take my sister out shooting again this weekend, and this time we wanted to hit up the city. I was most excited about shooting in and around the parking garage, crazy as it sounds. And that parking garage didn't disappoint! It was my favorite location of the day, and this was one of the first photos we took right after getting out of the car. It was fantastic dramatic lighting and my sister rocked it. Thanks for being my model again, Jamie. ♥

i ♥ faces photo challenge: Focusing on Angles

The theme this week at iheartfaces is "Focusing on Angles" and for the first time I actually took the picture for the theme, rather than finding a picture already taken after the theme was announced. I love to see different angles in photography and although it may not come naturally to me, it is something I have been trying to work very hard on. My daughter is not so willing to pose these days, and to get just a few moments of cooperation is sure to cost me 30 extra minutes before bed or maybe a chocolate ice cream bar. Even then it's slim pickings. I usually end up with expressions like this.
(which I love BTW, don't get me wrong) ;)

Are we done yet?!? Because this is like the third picture you've taken already! geeze.

I originally added these photos to the iheartfaces challenge, but needed to edit it down to just one. But I wanted to repost these as it seems most everyone that stopped by so far enjoyed them. Cali was being super helpful and allowing me to practice shutter priority mode last fall, which turned out to be about an hour of fun a giggles. :)

The Challenge at i♥faces is "Jump for Joy." I have some fun jumping pictures from when I was practicing shutter priority mode last fall. It ended up being a really fun time for myself and my daughter. We laughed so much and she caught on quick that the dramatic facial expressions made for better jumping shots. We had to look at every one after every jump, of course. :)

This photo was taken in July 2009 at a "Breakfast with a princess" event. We picked the early session and were the only ones in that slot! What a treat this was for Cali, she was absolutely beside herself with giggles.

The calm before the storm. You know your going to get hit hard when the townships start declaring a snow emergency the night before it even starts. These three shots will be good "before" shots for the days to come. ;)

Bandit is my little sisters kitten. I nicknamed him trouble because he fell down some stairs and broke his hip, bless his heart and his mommy's wallet. As you can see, he has recovered 100%. Bandit, you are one handsome dude.

I'm late! hehe

It's been a busy week with lots of new things going on. The most immediate is a rally to win a photo contest for a great rescue I volunteer for. I had intended on spending hours practicing my new light set, but last minute plans switched that to 3 girls and a bottle of wine. I only took one picture that night, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. The girls night in, or the picture I took. HAHA!

I had taken no pictures until after dark but I had just purchased a light set and needed to learn. I took many many pictures that night so I wasn't shooting for creativity, but more for learning purposes. However, the very last shot of the night was my favorite. It happens like that a lot with me. I will have a really frustrating session and when it comes to down to the one I like, the very last picture always seems to win out. Weird.

The cats got in on the learning action as well, lol!

It was a beautiful day today. Sunny, in the low 50's. A perfect day to go ice skating! We had so much fun. :)

I liked the unusual shapes and pattern to the clouds. Later that night we had the most beautiful sunset I have seen in a really long time, but I had left the house without my camera for probably the first time since Jan 1st. Bummer!!!

The other day I noticed an old abandoned train sitting on some tracks off in the distance. I took a mental note and knew I wanted to check it out sometime soon. So I left 15 min early today so i could stop by real quick. I wish I had some more time and someone to shoot on this abandoned train. I also wish I would have had my kit lens with me as I was pretty limited with my 50mm.

There were no trespassing signs all over and they had the windows in the doors all boarded up. Boy, have I been a rebel lately. :)-

Thursday nights is Gymnastics Class, and I have spent the last 10 or so weeks trying to figure out how to get decent shots in such low crappy light. LOL

Well I have learned no matter how much I want to use my zoom lens, it just won't work. I have to use my 50mm 1.8 to be able to get some shots that aren't blurry.

Here is my sweet girl doing a handstand on the balance beam. :)

Ahhh, what a day. Today was tough for my assignment. I took some pics, sure. But wasn't really happy with any of them. I took most after work today in the house in artificial light and it just makes me cringe! Maybe if I were better at post processing or using a custom white balance or even a gray card it wouldn't be so bad. But yeah, those are all on my "to learn" list. LOL!

I was able to snap one this AM while waiting for the bus. :)

And this evening we tried to balance spoons on our noses. But umm, we could only get it to work on our mouths. hehe. Must practice this more. :)

I kind of like how the spoon makes me look skinny :)

Cali got this huge chocolate Santa for Christmas (what was I thinking!?!?)

Today was another frigid day. I think it's technically about 23 degrees, but the wind chill brings it down to 9. I had hoped to take Cali to an awesome old building today for a shoot but we both would have been miserable so I scrapped that idea. We did, however, have to leave the house for other reasons so I snapped a quick shot of Cali while we were waiting for the car to warm up.

While we were heading to my work we passed a dairy farm that screams Kodak moment every time I pass it. ;) I have never had enough guts to stop and take some pictures....until today. I took one quick one then got back in the car and sped away! Okay, so i didn't speed away but you get the idea. :)

Cali enjoyed stopping to see the cows. :)

I took a drive today to take some shots of the beautiful nature around PA. I was out of the car for about 10 minutes at the first location before my hands and ears felt like they were going to fall off. (and that was with gloves and a hat on!) So my plans were cut short and I only went to 2 places and didn't even get out of the car at the second location. LOL!

I have one last "top ten" I would like to share and that would be of my Family.

10. My sweet girl, up close and personal, chapped lips and all. :)

9. Pretty Leo. I like this one because to me it's mysterious.

7. One of my favorite spots in PA. Sam Lewis State park, up high on a hill overlooking the mighty Susquehanna River.

6. This is definitely one of my favorites of the year. A toothless smile is priceless!

5. My Rajah boy. I have so many wonderful pictures of him, but this is my favorite because it captures his personality as well as his beauty.

2. Cali and Rajah have always had a special bond. This picture is literally the very first moment they met and was very much in the running for my favorite family capture of 2009.

1. Narrowly sliding in at number one is no surprise since it's currently my blog header! This is Cali and her Daddy at her 6th birthday party and in my opinion one of the best pictures I have taken with my dslr. :)

The only paid work I did in 2009 was a fundraiser to help a sick foster cat of mine get the vet care he needed. I want to say another big THANK YOU to those of you that answered my ad and allowed me to photograph your fur kids for a good cause. Camelot is now receiving his allergy shots and he also got the best Christmas present ever! His new forever home and best friend, my Mom. :)

It just wouldn't be right without showing off the handsome guy we all came together to help. Introducing Camelot!

2009 Top Ten - Random

I am going to be posting a series of my top ten favorites of 2009. When I tried to narrow it down to 10 only, I realized it wasn't going to happen. I decided to do a couple different categories instead.

I purchased my starter DSLR in March, so I am still in the very beginning stages of learning. I look forward to comparing my favorites from 2009 to my favorites from 2010, and beyond!

Tonights 2009 Top Ten is my 'Random' Category.

10. I love this. Totally random but a snapshot of life 32,000 feet up in the air. There is no other time you are so restricted in your control over everything. Which is probably why it scares the crap out of me. haha!

9. Ahhh, much better. Who doesn't like the beach?

8. All I needed for this shot was a big frog. But only lions and tigers and bears in sight. This was taken at Lake Tobias Wildlife Park in PA.

7. I can't really take much credit for this next capture. My very talented sister did all the hard work. :) This was taken on the airplane ride, which happened to have been booked on my daughters 6th birthday. Her favorite character is Hello Kitty so Jamie was drawing her a picture. She makes it look so easy!

3. Ok, how about a beach Bonfire instead? I love this capture because it brings me back to my younger days. I can almost imagine being there, Coors light in hand. :)

2. This was a random couple on the beach in Maryland. They were taking self portraits with a camera that they were then looking at together. I couldn't resist snapping this with my zoom lens.

1. And my favorite random capture of 2009 is from 4th of July. This was the first year my daughter would even hold the sparklers!

Welcome to my blog!

You may have noticed this is my very first post. I am a beginner to the photography world and just getting started. What got me moving to finally get a blog up and running? That would be a very cool photography blog I have recently come across that runs a weekly photo contest. Not necessarily a big deal in itself, but this week just happens to be Pets Only. Talk about great timing! I couldn't resist. The only catch? You have to post your entry right from your blog. So thank you, i ♥ faces, for giving me incentive to get a long overdue blog up, and I hope you enjoy my very first entry to your contests.

Introducing Handsome Leo.

Leo is one of my foster cats and is still a little bit timid. When he sees that big black camera coming his way he must think it's going to reach out and bite him. He was asleep on the couch before I disturbed him, resulting in capturing his wake up yawn. Ahhh, it's tough work being a cat. The only thing I wish could have been different would be if the Christmas tree lights were turned on behind him.
